Looking Forward To Our Expanded Centre
Over the summer, we’ve been hard at work expanding our community centre at 2680 Blanshard Street. With the help of Naomi Casiro and NeuroFit, a grant from Rotary Club Victoria-Harbourside, and the financial support of $10,000 from Blanshard Square's owner Group Denux, we have been able to add an entirely new exercise space, along with expanded offices for our staff and counselor.
With renovations nearly complete, we are excited to expand our programs and launch Fundamentals of Functional Movement, designed and taught by Naomi Casiro. This exclusive exercise-based treatment program uses gait training, stability and mobility flows, global movements and falls training to improve function and help participants move better than they ever thought they could. These classes teach movements that can then be practiced at home, and we look forward to bringing them to our community.
Thank you again to Rotary Victoria-Harbourside and to Group Denux, without whom this partnership with Neurofit would not have been possible. We look forward to showing you all the new space soon!

Instructor Highlight - Joseph MacDonell
Born and raised in rural Nova Scotia, Joseph worked in Technology Consulting, helping large multinational organizations strategize, design, and implement complex technology solutions, across North America and Europe, before trading in the corporate suits and business trips for boxing gloves.
Joseph’s credentials include Boxing BC Registered Coach, Rock Steady Boxing Coach Certificate, and rigorous Muay Thai Boxing training in Phuket, Thailand. He is absolutely thrilled to share his love of martial arts and movement with the PWP community. His intentions are to recognize the uniqueness of each individual, to provide a safe and accepting space to express one's gifts, and to foster community connections, incorporating creativity, patience, play, and humour into his coaching.
When not coaching, Joseph’s interests include reading, time in nature, and studying Cape Breton fiddling. He hopes one day to become a true Master fiddler, sharing beautiful Scottish melodies far and wide.
If you’d like Joseph to introduce you to Rock Steady Boxing, he teaches our introductory courses Friday mornings at 9:00 AM for all levels. Contact our office at info@parkinsonwellness.ca for more information or to register.

Thrashing in one’s sleep is a common diagnostic condition for people with Parkinson’s. In a new article, “Possibilities with Parkinson’s” columnist Dr. C discusses dealing with thrashing and night-time interruptions, and how he handled documenting and studying the situation. Read here for more information.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation has shared four upcoming studies on Parkinson’s in need of volunteers. These initiatives aim to understand Parkinson’s better, help to treat dyskinesia (a common complication of Parkinson’s medication), targeting key proteins to slow the spread of the disease, and testing the benefits of exercise on slowing the effects of Parkinson’s.

Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact boxing-based fitness curriculum which adapts exercises from boxing drills to support people with Parkinson’s Disease.
Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the perceived capabilities of the participant. Rock Steady Boxing is one of the fitness programs in use by Parkinson Wellness Project for our own participants.
