Why Parkinson Specific Exercises as PWP?
‘PWR!4Life™ is not a static or singular approach. It is a comprehensive neuroplasticity-principled program that integrates the latest research on Parkinson disease and Rehabilitation, Exercise, and Wellness. Therefore, it is always being updated. This type of research-based integrated exercise and wellness programming is necessary to counteract the inactivity, motor deterioration, and symptoms of PD. PWR!4Life is a PROACTIVE program that allows you to optimize your brain change (neuroplasticity), brain repair, and increase your desire to participate in everyday LIFE. Therefore, it should start at diagnosis and continue “4 Life”! With early intervention and ongoing programming, you can GET BETTER and STAY BETTER.
But better yet, your efforts may trigger positive brain changes (neuroplasticity) that are disease modifying and thereby, contribute to slowing the disease progression.’ Dr Becky Farley. www.pwr4life.org.
PWR!Moves are the foundations for our exercise classes at PWP. They are integrated into our Rock Steady boxing classes, Yoga and our Dance4PD. We use them in our voice practice. The PWR!Moves are taught and practiced in our PWP!FIT classes. Each of the basic four PWR!Moves directly target the skills needed to combat your own Parkinson’s symptoms.
What is the right type of exercise? There are two types of exercises that are essential: progressive aerobics exercise and skill training. Progressive aerobics training requires that you challenge yourself to do more than your own self-perceived effort. Even if you are an habitual exerciser, you need a coach to determine your baseline, help you set goals, and give you feedback and instruction so you work at the appropriate physical effort without compromising quality of practice or safety. Our Rock Steady Boxing classes are designed for you to be pushed to your maximum aerobic level while enjoying community camaraderie and learning new skills . Our PWP!FIT classes will teach you the 4 PWR!Moves that directly target the skills, shown by research, that become impaired when you have been diagnosed with PD.
